NASDAQ LEADS WALL STREET GAINS WITH TECH IN CHARGE

Wall Street indexes started the week as a mixed bag with Nasdaq .IXIC up about 1%, outpacing the S&P 500 .SPX and the Dow .DJI on the red side of flat.

The bond market is closed for Indigenous Peoples Day, and no economic data releases are in the cards for the day so its likely some traders and investors have taken the day off.

They may need the rest ahead of a busy week with earnings due from financial companies including Goldman Sachs GS.N, Citigroup C.N, Bank of America BAC.N and Discover Financial DS.N and consumer names such as Walgreens Boots Alliance WBA.O, Procter & Gamble PG.N and Albertsons ACI.N.

And speaking of consumers, one hotly anticipated data release due this week is retail sales, due on Thursday.

Still, on Monday, the S&P 500 technology sector .SPLRCT is the perkiest of the benchmark's 11 major sectors with a gain of 1.4% with a lot of help from chip stocks as the Philadelphia semiconductor index .SOX is up 1.5%. In second place among the major sectors is communication services .SPLRCL, up ~1%, as Alphabet GOOGL.O and Meta META.O busted out some moves.

Among the laggards, energy .SPNY and materials .SPLRCM are the weakest groups.
