Recasts with comments from economy minister on taxing banks

MILAN, Oct 11 (Reuters) -Italy is discussing with banks how they should contribute to the country's public finances, something which should not be considered as "blasphemy", government representatives said on Friday.

Attending an economic conference organised by conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party in Milan, Deputy Economy Minister Maurizio Leo told reporters discussions with the banking industry were ongoing.

"There are different solutions we are discussing," he said. "We have to find something that is balanced, that brings revenue to state coffers," he said.

He ruled out targeting energycompanies as the government seeks to increase revenues to finance next year's budget.

Earlier on Friday, speaking at the same conference, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said the 2025 budget would be "reasonable".

"There will be cuts, significant ones, for ministries and public institutions. And light measures on the revenues side," Giorgetti said.

"There will be sacrifices to be made, but only for those who deserve to make them. Let's say that ordinary people and businesses have nothing to be afraid of," he added.

Italy last year shocked markets by imposing a 40% tax on banks' windfall profits, only to hastily backtrack, limiting its scope and eventually giving lenders an opt-out which meant it raised no revenues.

The prospect of another one-off tax has weighed on Italian banking shares in the run-up to the budget presentation in the absence of clarity from the government, which denied any such measure was in the works.

Giorgetti has said on multiple occasions, lastly at a financial conference in Milan last week, that "everyone will be called upon to make sacrifices".

"I last said it in front of an audience of bankers and honestly, it didn't seem like blasphemy to me. A big controversy ensued ... but I would say it again in front of bankers."
